Not often does one meet actual adventurers who have a fearless spirit of adventure and a capitivating sense of joy. This was Rex Wotton, a sailor, climber, scuba diver, and a great sport. Rex Wotton managed the West Coast Watersports shop at Coral Reef hotel, just up the beach from Settlers Beach. They took hotel guest diving and on daytime and sunset cruises around the coast. He was a master seaman trained by the Royal Merchant Navy in navigation, sailing, diving, explosives, and marine work. Rex Wotton was just one of the most captivating Rogues in Paradise. He had an amazing sense of fun and used it to win over every situation. He was independent at an early age and often took off for days at a time, camping along the banks of Joes' river . He built campfires from coconut husk and twigs and cooked his catch with breadfruit, wild herbs, plantain, and edible vines. He ate mangoes, and local berries like fat pork, and sea grapes, that grow along the beach.
He was a strong high-energy figure at 5 feet 8 inches, well built, with untidy, light-brown hair and piercing blue eyes. Not one for formal exercises; he did not run, jog, push weights, or do any approved gym. Hard work, dynamic play, and managing the West Coast water was his workout. He sailed, instructed scuba diving, and was always busy fixing boats, engines, and gear. He chauffeured people, food, drinks, and scuba gear, from hotels to oceans and had a full schedule of on-the-job workouts. The scuba tanks were substantial, and it was a high-impact sport to pile 20 tanks into the old VolsWagan van. They had to be unpacked and piled in the dive shop and later strapped onto guests for the deep dives and shallow water instructions. He was rarely still.
